How has your weight affected your quality of life?
Six years ago, the company I worked for went into liquidation, and I lost my job. Not to worry, as I had plenty of experience and heavy machinery tickets, I was sure to get another job. Sure enough, I got a job, but with that job came a medical and fitness test.
Even at 186kgs, I wasn’t worried about passing as I was strong and quite fit for my size, and I was right; I passed the physical and medical side. However, due to the rules of the 120kg maximum weight of the heavy machine seat, I failed due to my weight.
This was a very low point in my life as I had a partner, toddler and newborn baby to take care of.
When did you decide to get weight loss surgery?
After being recommended by a past patient, I got a referral from my GP to my surgeon at Health Volition. This man changed my life for the better; he gave me the tools to take control back. I lost close to 80kgs, and I’ve become healthier, fitter, and most of all, happier.
The confidence to just walk into a shop and try on “normal size” clothes and have them fit is just a feeling I cannot describe. Especially after being overweight for most of my life and trying all of the fab diets around and failing time after time. I have finally found a solution that enables me to keep track of my weight and health.
How did Health Volition help you on your weight loss journey?
After my surgery, I wasn’t just left to go on my merry way and deal with any problems, questions or concerns I had. Health Volition provided care and support for twelve months after my surgery, including regular check-ups with my surgeon, whether via Skype, phone, or in person at the clinic.
On top of that, I had regular appointments with a dietitian to help through those first couple of phases after the surgery and then after to help keep me on track. But wait, that’s not all! I had an appointment before surgery with the Health Volition psychiatrist, and any post-operative appointments were made available as needed.
I am six years post-op and can still access the same support from the team as if it was my first day of referral of surgery.
