How has your weight affected your quality of life?
Growing up in the 60s, there wasn’t fast food to be had, even if my parents could afford it. The food was good and nutritious. As a family, we rode bikes, walked, and caught buses to get anywhere. There was certainly no sitting around.
All my life, I have been “the fat kid”, the fat teenager, and so on. I was a lifetime member of Weight Watchers at 15. So, over time, I would lose a bit of weight and then put it all back on, plus some.
When my children got married, I managed to lose a bit of weight for the occasion, and then, as much as I tried to prevent it from happening again, what I lost returned. Every decade, I’d say by the time I’m 40, 50 and then 60, that’s the last time I’m going to have a significant birthday as a fat person.
When did you decide to explore weight loss surgery?
The year I turned 60, I had left a 40-year marriage and thought, well, it’s now or never to get myself in order. I was 93kg when I first visited the Health Volition office. I’m sure I have been heavier, but that’s where I was. Poo 93, “That’s nothing”, I can hear a lot say, but at 160cm (5ft3in), that is wider than taller.
I had my peace of mind surgery in January 2019. My head is no longer filled with “don’t eat that”, “tomorrow will be better”, “just a bit then”, and then I devour the lot. My taste buds no longer rule me. I love not hiding under tent-like clothes.
How did Health Volition help you on your weight loss journey?
I have been fortunate that I didn’t have any serious health issues before the surgery and have not had any difficulties since. I feel like I have been set free. I’ve seen a few posts from people who are in the same age range asking if they should go down this road. Of course, everyone’s story is different, but I wouldn’t change this for the world.
