A beneficial way of looking at the two week diet is as a medical prescription for a more successful surgery.

The weight loss you achieve in the two weeks is not only significantly beneficial for surgical risk reduction, but also proves to you the strength of your will power and begins the process of comorbidity reduction. When used correctly, the VLCD Shakes forces your body to burn your body fat through a process called ketosis.

Ketosis: When your body has minimal energy from foods, particularly carbohydrates, it will start breaking down stored body fats as the main source of energy. Ketosis will also result in the production of a natural appetite suppressant for your body, so once you push through the first few days the diet will become much easier.

If you deviate from the Optifast diet guidelines, the ketosis process will not “turn on”. This means that it will actually be harder for your body to suppress appetite and the diet is significantly more difficult to follow.
